"I have thrown every ridiculous and challenging guitar project, upgrade and repair and this man that I can find over the last few years and somehow he still always exceeds my expectations...He's also just a kind and lovely person to deal with and a consummate professional."

REPAIR & RESTORE

I have always enjoyed instrument repair, and offer the full range of repair services on all stringed instruments (including orchestral strings), as well as woodwinds.

Additionally, I specialize in structural repair and French Polish finish restoration, as I find these to be the most fulfilling and interesting. Structural repair  encompasses crack and brace repair, neck resets, bridge repairs and fabrication, re-topping, and several other repairs.

FRENCH POLISH RESTORATION AND REFINISH

I am one of few who specialize in the art of French Polish. French Polish is a traditional shellac finishing method, which is prized amongst classical and steel string players alike for its luster and relative thinness compared to other finishing methods.

Unlike modern sprayed finishes, French Polish is a hand-applied shellac finish. Developed in the late 1700s, french polish involves dissolving shellac flakes into alcohol, and applying thin coats with a specially made pad (or muñeca) which melt together into a single layer finish. This process involves dozens of steps, and is extremely time and labor intensive.

This process results in a very thin finish which allows the instrument to vibrate much more freely than other finish options, which in turn allows the instrument to be considerably more responsive. This finish is also easily repairable, easily cleanable, and may be rubbed out to any degree of luster desired while retaining its attractive warmth. For these reasons, it is the only finish I use for my own guitars, both steel string and classical.

I offer French Polish finishing services for luthiers who may send an instrument to me "in the white" and have it French Polished, as well as anybody who would like their instrument's finish removed and refinished with French Polish. Some also wish to have the soundboard of the instrument refinished with French Polish while leaving a more durable, sprayed finish on the back and sides; I am able to do this as well. Please contact me here for price and scheduling inquiries.
