ABOUT THE LUTHIER

Steinbock Fine Instruments is a one-man lutherie shop nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains and run by luthier Joseph Steinbock.

Joseph comes to lutherie from a longstanding musical background, classically trained in piano, clarinet, and guitar. He has performed throughout 9 different countries around the world and attributes his love for the world's various musical cultures to these travels.

Joseph's passion for instrument repair and building began due to his longtime professor and mentor, Eric Mandat, who always stressed that if one is to play an instrument, one should be able to repair it as well. Because of this, Joseph became heavily involved in woodwind and stringed instrument repair. Joseph developed a deep love for the acoustic guitar, which became his primary instrument as well as his main focus in his repair and restoration work.

Years of extensive repair and restoration experience led Joseph to study guitar design and fall in love with building instruments. As time went on, he developed bracing patterns, studied air cavity sizes, plate thickness, active-design plate coupling, and instrument design. Through this, Steinbock Fine Instruments was born with a mission to push the boundaries of the modern acoustic guitar. Each guitar that comes out of Joseph's shop is carefully hand-crafted to be exceptionally responsive and feel like an extension of the musician themself.
