THE TOP SELECTIONS

The soundboard is responsible for an overwhelming majority of the instrument's voice, determined by the species of wood and accompanying bracing. As such, I use a bracing pattern and methodology I've developed over the years to coax the ideal sound from the top: a present, sustaining, and clear fundamental that blossoms into beautifully balanced overtones before gradually rounding off.

Due to the extraordinary potential that the best soundboards have, I focus primarily on one species: Italian Alpine Spruce (Picea abies). The tops I have available have been carefully graded based on density, stiffness, and sound radiation coefficient. These inform the best use for the top, based on how its intended owner will use it. I believe one's instrument should be an extension of oneself, so an appropriate pairing is essential.

I also offer other soundboard species, each with their own unique benefits and characteristics. Within species, I have variations such as bear claw as well as heat treated tops. Please inquire for additional information about tone profiles across species or availability of non-spruce species such as cedar and redwood.
